NEP: Reconciliation Ceremony 2018

Don't Keep History a Mystery.

On Thursday 23 May, the Nirimba Precinct partners came together for their annual Reconciliation Ceremony.

The ceremony began with music - courtesy of Brandon Huges and his didgeridoo skills. Brandon (StJPSII Alumni) is self-taught, and his didgeridoo was hand-crafted and painted by his father.

ReconciliationDay_12The MC for the evening was Alan Moran, who then introduced our Precinct Elder - Uncle Greg. Uncle Greg's Welcome to Country was inspiring.

One memorable quote included: "...once we start learning from each other, then we'll be heading in the right direction towards reconciliation. And don't you think the music would sound much better if we use both the black and the white keys?"

We were then privileged to watch three dance items by Quakers Hill High School students and their teachers, acknowledging and paying tribute to the rituals performed by Indigenous Australian people.

Mr David McLeod-Jones (DP, Wyndham College) presented the Occasional Address, instilling the theme introduced by Uncle Greg of "Don't Keep History a Mystery", followed by the Sea of Hands - where everyone was invited to place a hand in the grass to symbolise unity within Australia.

Lunch was then served by St John Paul II students.

We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we met on Thursday, the Darug people and we pay our respects to Elders past and present.
