Our Year 7s had a blast last week fitting the solar system in our school oval on a beautiful autumn day. โ๏ธ Sun = 1 metre wide ๐ 1 metre = 1 AU (Distance from Earth to Sun) Inner Planets: Literally huddling for warmth next to the Sun. โ๏ธ๐ฅ Jupiter & Beyond: We wish we had a drone to show how much further apart they are! ๐ธ๐จ We had the Earth 1m away from the Sun and Pluto far away at 39m. If we kept that scale, would the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, be in Parramatta or all the way to Canberra? ๐ #ScienceVibes #Year7 #SpaceIsBig #OrbitLife #STEM #HandsOnLearning

As part of a new pilot program, students at St John Paul II Catholic College are working with a small group of Year 5 students from St Joseph's Primary School Schofields to mentor them in Agriculture. At the Hawkesbury Show, for the first time, two Year 5 students joined us to assist with showing sheep. All students are to be commended for their hard work. We look forward to working with St Joseph's Primary School again. Well done to these students, who competed against high school students in their very first event. ๐คฉ

๐ฃ Debating Team in Canberra! ๐ฃ Although CSDA Debating began in Week 1, our students had already commenced intensive preparation during the holidays, including a visit to Canberra where they explored key themes in civics, sport, history and science. Students engaged in a range of rich learning experiences, including visits to the Australian Institute of Sport, the Museum of Australian Democracy, Parliament House, the National Museum of Australia, the Australian War Memorial, Mt Stromlo Observatory, the National Gallery of Australia, and the National Archives of Australia. To see the new developments in the Australian War memorial so close to ANZAC day and the last post also acknowledging the 105th birthday of the Royal Australian Air Force and the life or heroics of Captain Henry Haigh Storrer. A highlight of the trip was at Mt Stromlo Observatory, students met with an astrophysicist, explored cutting-edge research, viewed Brian P. Schmidtโs Nobel Prize awarded for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae, and learned about Australiaโs role in the upcoming Artemis II mission. Whilst we also had the opportunity at Parliament House to speak with Attorney-General โ the Hon Michelle Rowland MP , a CSDA debating alumni herself, who generously shared her insights and provided inspiration for our students. Students also had the opportunity to connect with our local member, Ed Husic MP. Whilst at the Australian Institute of Sport, we were privileged when some professional athletes provided us insight into the training and work behind the Institute's work. These experiences have provided a strong foundation as students begin their debating season, equipping them with knowledge, perspective and confidence.
